On May 23, 2018, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross initiated a Section 232 investigation on auto imports into the U.S., according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC).

The purpose of the investigation is to determine whether imports of automobiles, including SUVs, vans and light trucks, and automotive parts into the U.S. threaten national security. In a letter to the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Commerce said, “The Department of Commerce will conduct a thorough, fair, and transparent investigation into whether such imports are weakening our internal economy and may impair the national security.”

A Federal Register notice will be published shortly announcing a hearing date and inviting comments from the industry and the public.
